Ranking Every Best Picture Nominee

The 2023 Golden Globes winners will be announced on Tuesday, January 10, in a televised ceremony after some time away from the small screen (via Variety). Indeed, awards season is always exciting and a great time to look back at all the wonderful accomplishments in film and television over the past year. 2022 was an especially rewarding year for the film industry due to the long-awaited and extremely successful projects that had finally been released. James Cameron’s epic and highly anticipated Avatar: The Way of Water was finally released in December 2022. Audiences around the world had been waiting to see this Avatar sequel since the release of the first film in 2009. Films like Elvis, on the other hand, were pushing back their release date for years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which pushed back production on the movie. Luckily, though, Baz Luhrmann, Austin Butler, and Tom Hanks finally got to show the world their incredible film and beautiful tribute to the king of rock n’ roll in the summer of 2022. This past year has been filled with a true abundance of creativity.

Damien Chazelle’s babylon is another movie that has been in the works for quite some time. Chazelle said that he had the idea and script for babylon before whiplash and La La Land, but didn’t feel he was ready to tackle a project this ambitious and out there yet. In addition to babylon receiving a nomination for Best Motion Picture – Musical/Comedy, it also received three acting nominations for its stars Diego Calva, Margot Robbie, and Brad Pitt. Here are all the Golden Globes 2023 Best Picture nominees, ranked.


10/10 Triangle of Sadness


Ruben Ostlund’s Triangle of Sadness is a comedy/drama that follows a group of extremely wealthy people who board a cruise ship that sinks and leaves a number of highly difficult individuals left as survivors. The film stars Charlbi Dean Kriek, Harris Dickinson, Woody Harrelson, Dolly De Leon, Vicki Berlin, and Carolina Gynning. The Swedish director has created a number of successful films throughout his career, including Force Majeure, The Squareand Play. Östlund notoriously receives positive reviews and has even won awards at the Cannes Film Festival, so it’s no surprise that his film Triangle of Sadness is nominated for Best Picture – Musical or Comedy at the Golden Globes.

9/10 Everything Everywhere All at Once


Another nominee in the category of Best Picture – Musical or Comedy is Everything Everywhere All at Once. This A24 adventure/sci-fi received great reviews from both critics and audience members. With a 95% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s safe to say the film was a success. Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert directed the film, which follows an unlikely hero who finds her strength and courage when forced to fight strange creators from throughout the multiverse.

8/10 Top Gun: Maverick

Arguably one of the most successful films of the year was Paramount’s Top Gun: Maverick. This sequel to the original Top Gun released in 1986 earned $1.488 billion at the box office, making it the highest-grossing film of 2022. Tom Cruise jumps right back into his role as Pete Mitchell or “Maverick,” while Miles Teller embodies a completely new character to the storyline that audiences immediately fell in love with. Even eight months after its release, Top Gun: Maverick is still receiving millions of streams and is by far one of the most successful films of the year, and serving of its Best Picture nomination.

7/10 Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is the second installment in the Knives Out franchise. Fans have been eager for the crime/comedy film to be released since the original Knives Out did so well back in 2019. The story follows a group of elite and successful individuals, who meet up to spend the weekend on their billionaire friend’s private island at the eponymous Glass Onion. Little do they know, there is a killer among the group, and the weekend, intended to be filled with lighthearted games, turns into a real murder mystery. Daniel Craig, Edward Norton, Madelyn Cline, Kate Hudson, Jessica Henwick, Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Dave Bautista, and Leslie Odom Jr. make up the film’s incredible cast.

6/10 The Banshees of Inisherin

This Best Picture – Musical or Comedy nominee is one of the most critically acclaimed films of the year. Martin McDonagh, who is best known for his Academy Award-winning film Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and In Burges, directed this film about a man living off the coast of Ireland, whose lifelong best friend suddenly puts an end to their relationship. The man, Pádaric, goes on a journey to repair his friendship and faces unexpected challenges along the way. The Banshees of Inisherin is definitely one of this year’s top contenders for Best Picture.

5/10 Tar

Cate Blanchett shines in this film about a renowned musician, who, at the cusp of her career-altering performance, faces some of the most testing moments of her career. Tar is a beautiful story about a dedicated artist and the bond between mother and daughter. Todd Field is the visionary director behind the project and has been nominated this year for Best Screenplay – Motion Picture at the Golden Globes. Blanchett’s performance is what makes this film so incredible, and she is also a top contender for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama.

4/10 Avatar: The Way of Water

The most hyped and anticipated film of 2022 was without a doubt Avatar: The Way of Water. James Cameron’s sequel to the original Avatar has been in the works since the release of the original film in 2009. After multiple release date changes over the course of the past few years, in December 2022, the second installment of the franchise was finally released. With a run time of over three hours long, the reviews for Avatar: The Way of Water have been mixed, with the top critic being the length of the film. Production has already begun on the third and fourth installments of the franchise, and Cameron anticipates making a total of five Avatar movies.

Wild, unexpected, lavish, and shocking Academy Award-winning filmmaker Damien Chazelle’s babylon is a true spectacle. From the moment the movie begins, all the way to the end, your jaw will be on the floor. There is so much about babylon that will take you by surprise, but, at its core, the movie is a hate letter to Hollywood, and a love letter to cinema. It’s about the rise and fall of five individuals in the film industry during the transition from silent pictures to talkies (via TIME). This film exposes how wild and unregulated Hollywood and the film industry in the 1920s were. Diego Calva, Margot Robbie, and Brad Pitt give incredible performances, and are all nominated for Golden Globes for their respected roles.

2/10 Elvis

Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis is a tribute to the king of rock n’ roll and the challenges Elvis Presley faced throughout his life in becoming the legend he is today. Starting with Elvis’ childhood, the film takes us through Presley’s entire life, from his first encounters with music, his family life, his first performance, and everything about his career up until his death. Austin Butler gives the performance of his career, embodying Elvis as much as anyone possibly could. After watching Elvis, you can really feel how much Presley truly loved his fans and how his entire life was devoted to music.

Steven Spielberg is one of the greatest living directors. With classics such as Jaws, ET, Jurassic Park, Schindler’s List, and Saving Private Ryan, there is no shortage of incredible works the filmmaker has created. Each one of his films is so special, and The Fabelmans is no exception to this. The story is about a young boy who falls in love with movies and starts to create his own films at home with the support of his family. Gabriel LaBelle, Michelle Williams, Paul Dano, and Julia Butters all give great performances in the film. The Fabelmans is a favorite amongst both critics and audiences, and is expected to do great this upcoming awards season.
